I just watched Alfonso Cuaron's futuristic movie Children of Men last night. I had been wanting to watch this film for a long time based on simply, its plot and premise, unique camera techniques.
I have to say, I was neither over or underwhelmed. It fit right into what I expected, which is a good thing. I love its originality, unique style of film making, and its emotional intensity. Clive Owen was perfectly cast as the reluctant hero, the last person expected to protect and ensure the safety of Kee who represented the lingering hope for the continuance of the human race. I admired Theo's intelligence and persistence, he probably felt more emotion and determination than he had for the past twenty years.
Performances from the supporting cast were all strong as well. Julianne Moore did not have a lot of screen time, but her unwavering poise as an activist conveyed character strength, yet the audience still can perceive her vulnerability and hurt, due to her and Theo's tragic past.
This film is unique to its long take technique, effective to elicit a "real time", documentary timeline for the movie. I believe Cuaron's purpose was not to produce a thriller, action, or futuristic film. He wanted to address difficult questions, and directly explored a defaulted political climate, and anthropological environment.
Highly recommended. Watch this film if you want to have a great discussion with your fellow audience, or simply introspectively reflect as an individual viewer.
